Volunteer Opportunities
Participation in OLLI at UNT can mean much more than attending courses and special
events. It can also mean volunteering to help advise and grow the program or participating
in service opportunities on campus and in the community. Every OLLI member is encouraged
to consider joining a Standing Committee, serving as an OLLI at UNT Ambassador, and
standing for election to the Advisory Council.
Friends of PUSH
The PUSH (Persevere Until Success Happens) program at UNT provides a campus-wide network of support for students who have experienced
foster care. Friends of PUSH are OLLI members who agree to be notified when there
are opportunities to help PUSH staff meet a student's needs.
UNT Food Pantry
To support students experiencing food insecurity, we host donation drives for
the
UNT Food Pantry each year at our summer and holiday socials. OLLI members can volunteer at the pantry
to support their day-to-day operations.
First-time pantry volunteers must complete an orientation that typically involves
30 minutes of training and 30 minutes of shadowing during open hours.
Advisory Council
The ten members of the Advisory Council work hand in hand with the OLLI at UNT Director
to review and evaluate policies and operations. The Council also works to provide
strategic planning that ensures successful program growth and quality that closely
aligns with the needs of OLLI at UNT membership. All those who serve on the Council
must be elected by the OLLI at UNT membership. Terms of service are two years (five
members elected in even numbered years and four in odd numbered years), with the possibility
of serving a second consecutive term.
The President of the Advisory Council chairs Council meetings, develops and distributes
meeting schedules and agendas, consults with and receives reports from committees,
and generally assists the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT in the conduct and functions
of the OLLI at UNT. The President of the Advisory Council becomes Past-President of
the Advisory Council following their one-year term as president.
The Vice-President of the Advisory Council assists the President and assumes the responsibilities
of the President in the event of the President’s absence or incapacity. The Advisory
Council normally promotes the Vice-President to President for the following Presidential
term.
The Secretary of the Advisory Council records minutes of all Advisory Council meetings
and distribute sdraft minutes to Advisory Council members as soon as practicable following
meetings. Upon approval of minutes by the Advisory Council, the Secretary files the
minutes in a permanent file accessible to all members of the Advisory Council. The
Secretary maintains a permanent record of the membership of the Advisory Council and
their terms of office.
The Fundraising Liaison of the Advisory Council serves as a liaison between the Advisory
Council and the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT on all fundraising matters related
to the program. The liaison provides feedback to the Senior Director on the program’s
annual giving, planned giving, and general fundraising initiatives. The liaison may
also make recommendations for future fundraising efforts.
The Communications Liaison of the Advisory Council assists the Senior Director of
OLLI at UNT with generating written and photographic content that staff can use to
tell the story of our OLLI and document our activities. They coordinate the efforts
of volunteers who serve as the Storytelling Team.
The Ambassador Outreach Liaison of the Advisory Council assists the Senior Director
of OLLI at UNT with the recruitment of new members. They coordinate the efforts of
volunteers who serve as the Ambassador Outreach Team, with the goal of identifying
opportunities to recruit new members through the distribution of promotional materials,
volunteer presentations, and other staff approved efforts.
The Staff Support Liaison of the Advisory Council assists the staff of OLLI at UNT
by arranging volunteer support for OLLI classes, events, and special projects as needed.
They communicate staff support needs to volunteers and coordinate the scheduling of
volunteer shifts.

Advisory Council History
Standing Committees
OLLI at UNT Standing Committees are made up of active members of the OLLI at UNT,
including at least one member of the Advisory Council. Standing committee members
are selected by the Advisory Council President and the Senior Director of OLLI at
UNT from a list of volunteers solicited annually by the Nominations Committee. Members
of standing committees normally serve a two-year term with an option to serve one
additional consecutive term. Members of standing committees must be paid in full members of OLLI at UNT. The President
and the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT may make appointments to standing committees
to ensure continuity and/or minimum numbers. The Advisory Council may create Ad Hoc
committees as necessary.
The Curriculum Committee assists the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT and staff in developing
plans for a stimulating, well-balanced schedule of courses for each academic term.
The committee works in partnership with the Director of OLLI at UNT to identify and
recruit instructors and course proposals. Prior to each academic term, with a deadline
determined by the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT, the committee shall review course
proposals and course evaluations, and shall prepare a list of recommended classes
for final review and selection by the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT.
While the review of courses is the responsibility of the Curriculum Committee, it
is in the purview of the Senior Director of OLLI at UNT to determine the curated lecture
series, special events, Special Interest Groups, and travel opportunities to ensure
a complete array of learning options for members. The Senior Director of OLLI at UNT
may consult with the Curriculum Committee for ideas regarding these additional options.
The Membership Committee assists the Director of OLLI at UNT in the retention of continuing
members, assessment of the membership and outreach to and services for the general
membership. The Membership Committee will also work on an annual membership evaluation
process and will present those findings to the Advisory Council and the Senior Director
of OLLI at UNT.
The Nominations Committee solicits nominees for election to the Advisory Council.
The Committee is responsible for establishing and reviewing criteria for nominations
to the Advisory Council, including but not limited to duration of membership, prior
committee participation or other service, and personal statements of interest and
experience. The slate of candidates for election will be presented to the Advisory
Council no later than the mid-point of the spring academic term to allow for timely
election by the Advisory Council and announcement of election results to the nominees
and to the membership. Typically the Nominations Committee is chaired by the Past-President
of the Advisory Council and contains a total of 3 members, all of whom are members
of the Advisory Council.
